The Art of the 'Not Now'

Not Now Dear on Rakuten Kobo

There is a particular kind of magic in the phrase not now. It isn’t a no. It doesn’t slam a door. It simply moves you to the front of your own queue.

We are taught, gently and relentlessly, that being available is the same as being good. That the quickest yes is the kindest one. But attention is the one currency we can never earn back, and most of us spend it as though it were infinite.

Not selfish — self-possessed

The heroine of Not Now Dear isn’t cold. She’s not building walls. She’s learning the difference between selfish and self-possessed:

  • Selfish takes without noticing the cost to anyone else.
  • Self-possessed notices the cost — to you — and decides it matters too.

A boundary is just a sentence you’re willing to finish.

A small practice

Next time the reflexive yes rises up, try trading it for a not now. Not forever. Just long enough to gather your thoughts and ask what you’d choose if the choice were genuinely yours.

You might be surprised how often it still turns out to be yes — only now it’s a yes you meant.
